yes...finally, i'm back!

i'm sorry i don't have any pictures from Market for you guys, my camera totally got jacked by the bell boy in my hotel...boo! but it's all good now, i have a new camera yesterday, and i'm back to posting. i threw a few pictures of my booth up on my LP facebook page if you really want to check out the booth...

market was went really great! we added some really fabulous new accounts! i'm taking the next step and working with marketing companies that will represent my jewelry line across the country. we now have reps in Georgia, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana and Arkansas. i'm super excited to work with these reps...i'll be sure to keep you posted.....

ok, you guys who know me know that i'm a HUGE freak fan of graffiti...tunes...and hip-hop dancing...well, i learned about Smirnoff's event called "mash up"...how crazy brilliant is Smirnoff and their marketing peeps by combining these three art forms into one fabulous jam session?!?!? can we say "thinking outside of the box"? i love creative minds coming up with innovative ways to merge and collaborate to create a really cool event.

i'm gonna have to be at the next "mash up"...anybody wanna join me?

so you all know i'm a huge fan of independent artist films on youtube...now these short video creators have a crack at having their video played in the guggenheim. the guggenheim is teaming up with youtube in an epic event, Youtube Play.

No other medium is pushing the boundaries of creativity like video. YouTube Play, a collaboration between YouTube and the Guggenheim Museum, wants to recognize and showcase the most remarkable online videos from around the world. To have your work considered simply post it on YouTube and then submit it at youtube.com/play. A jury of experts will decide which works will be shown at the Solomon R. What do you create?

I design and sew custom-made handbags.

When and why did you decide to start your business?

After high school, I went to college and graduate school and became a school psychologist. I worked as a psychologist in a school district for nine years. My children were both small and my heart was at home, while I was at work. So in 2007, I resigned. I had never owned a sewing machine, nor had I ever used one, but in the Summer of 2008, on a whim, I asked my mom to help me sew my first tote bag. She did, and told me I could have her old sewing machine. I've always been in love with purses, so I began designing and sewing bags, very basic at first, I didn't even know how to put in snaps or sew in zippers. After lots of practice and encouragement from friends and family, I began selling my beso handbags.

Where do you get your inspiration for your projects?

I am a mom. My inspiration comes from my own wants and needs as a mom, as well as those of other moms and working women I know. I know first hand what makes a good bag. It has to be modern, yet practical. Lots of pockets and a place for everything. I love the idea of letting the customer design her own bag. And I love to get feedback from my customers. Adjustable straps, sewn in key hooks, the back pack...all ideas that came from my customers.

Which of the tools you use is your favorite?

Right now, I am absolutely loving vintage fabrics. Every time I sew a bag in vintage fabric, I want to keep it!

What keeps you motivated?

I love what I do! Ever since I was a little girl, I have been designing and drawing and creating things. When a customer orders a bag, I can't wait to make it and see how it turns out! And I especially can't wait to hear what she thinks when it arrives. Loving what I do and getting the positive feedback that I get, knowing that my customers are waiting to see what new styles and fabrics I will release in the next season absolutely keeps me motivated.

How do you get the word out about your work?

Facebook has been amazing for my business! But I also have a few good friends who have agreed to work with me as regional representatives for my business. They organize home-based trunk shows and earn a commission from their sales. They have been invaluable to me. Also networking with other artists, like you Lily, have definitely helped me get the word out about my bags.

What is your main goal for the next 6-12 months?

I just released my Spring 2010 line in March. In September, it will be time to launch my Fall line again. This will mark my one year anniversary of beso handbags as it is today. Each season, I change up my fabrics and add a couple new bag styles. So my main goal for the coming year is to design a few new bags that I know my customers, both new and old, will love. Each season it is my goal to raise the bar a bit, from the previous season and go beyond my customers' expectations.

What advice would you give to someone starting a creative business?

My advice to someone starting a creative business, is to first and foremost love what you do. And second, stay true to what you love. Along with all the feedback I get, I also get suggestions to make things that just are not me. I don't make a bag, unless I would love carrying it, unless it reflects my style.

What’s the most important thing you’d like people to know/understand about your work?

My heart goes into each bag that I design and sew. When a client carries a beso bag that she designed herself, she can be sure that it was made with attention to every detail and that I enjoyed making it for her.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned while running your business?

I've learned many things while getting my business up and running. One of the most important lessons I've learned is that I can't be happy running my business unless I am creating pieces that I love and projecting an image to people that reflects me, as a person. My style of design may not appeal to everyone. I've had to work hard to find the right market for my designs and my price point. I have had to stay true to the vision that I have for my business. I have had people along the way, just trying to be helpful of course, try to steer me in a direction that they felt would be beneficial for me and my business. But in the end, it is always my decision, and the image that I choose to project, always reflects who I am as a designer.

If you had the time, what new craft/medium would you like to learn or use?

Design is one of my passions. I would love to expand my knowledge in this area and learn pattern making and clothing design.

What's your definition of a perfect day?

A great cup of coffee, kisses and hugs from my husband and my kids, a clean house, laundry done, an organized studio, a long walk, a great meal, a good show on t.v. and a good night's sleep. Its the little things.

i had the awesome opportunity to present my check to the Greenville Hospital System with talented artists, Christina Sawicki and Jessica Libor this past monday. together we were able to raise over $700 to donate to the Pediatric Cardiology Unit through the Arts for Hearts show we had February 11th. a big thanks to G-Mag for making this possible, and HUGE thanks to all of you who came out and supported the event last month...

The benefit, presented by G Magazine, Zen and Table 301 on Feb. 11, raised more than $700 for Pediatric Cardiology patients. Three Greenville-area artists worked together to make the benefit a success: painter Jessica Libor and jewelry designers Christina Sawicki and Lily Stratton.

we had a fabulous time at "Art for Hearts" this past Thursday night where organic, vintage, and fairy tale fine art combined to make a romantic statement with efforts to raise money for our local Children's Cardiology Unit. a HUGE thanks to all of you friends and supporters who came out to the show. i know the Chirdren's Cardiology Unit at Greenville Hospital is thrilled with the sales we had that will benefit them. You might be wondering where I've been for the past week, let's just say I've been "regrouping" and I'm finally back on track and super energized to give you the “scoop” on Lily Pottery!

As most of you know, I recently moved studios. I’m in the same neighborhood on Pendleton Street, but now my studio is at 1269 Pendleton St. The reason for my move is exciting…due to the growth Lily Pottery experienced in 2009, it became apparent that I needed a studio dedicated to creating and producing my jewelry line, which leads to my next announcement: Lily Pottery won’t be participating in First Fridays this year.

It was becoming extremely difficult to keep up with my wholesale account orders and have a show every month, so for 2010, I’m planning 4-6 events/shows. Some will be at my studio, others will be through different venues in town. I will be sure to let you know when I’m having a show or an event.
The expansion I’ve experienced is very exciting and this January’s past market doubled my wholesale accounts! Lily Pottery can now be found in 26 independent boutiques and shops across the US. Thank you for making this success possible! It’s because of the local and online support you’ve shown, and continue to show, that I’ve had these awesome opportunities.

For all of you locals, please know that I’m at my studio almost every day and MORE than happy for you to visit me. Whether you need a gift, or want to say hello, please don’t hesitate to drop in. a little something new...

i'm excited about a some new ideas i've been cooking up in the studio...these fun little dishes were inspired by a "pouch of wonders" my mom gave to me a while back...it was a bag full of vintage lace and tattered fabrics. i was totally taken with some of the gorgeous and delicate patterns in the lace. i wished there was some way to "preserve" this tattered lace...and then it hit me...there is a way! i began to press the lace into clay and well, the rest is pretty self explanatory, yes these little dishes were born...I've also been stamping different words in the dishes as well...i'm really excited to expand on this idea...many of these pieces will be making their debut February 11th at the Art for Hearts Charity Event sponsored by G-Magazine that I will be a guest artist at...stay tuned for more photos...

i'm back from the bit ATL...and whew...what a week! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! i want to thank all of you readers and lily pottery fans for being so supportive through the year of 2009. you guys ROCK! i couldn't do it without you guys and i'm so thankful for the support. 2009 was a big year for Lily Pottery and i'm so very excited to see what 2010 holds. i'm getting nestled into my new studio and i'm planning to start the new year off with a fresh view of my goals. I'm going to Market- the international gift show in Atlanta GA this coming wednesday, January 6, and i'm so excited. my first market trip this past July was so amazing. it stretched and grew me as an artist, business owner and individual in ways that i could've never imagined and i'm so excited to take the next step and see what this Market holds for me. I'll be sure to update you guys on the progress, but seriously, i couldn't do it without the undying support of you faithful LP fans! through the mountain top experiences and the super low valleys that Lily Pottery's treaded through this year, you guys were and are amazing and i just can't say thank you enough the the true friends and supporters who didn't leave my side in the rough times...you guys know who you are, and i can't start to name all of you, but please know, i love you guys and keep sharing your love! you guys ROCK and let's make 2010 rock even more than 2009!

taking a little break from the normal lily pottery posts to let you know about some new goodies i got for christmas to help me kick off 2010. this is the year i'm planning to run a full marathon. i've completed 4 half marathons with 10Ks scattered in between...but this is the year...i'm 26 years old and i'm running the big 26.2 this year! i'm planning to run the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington DC in September. i'm so excited about it! here's some of my new goodies to help me reach my goals...

i've had a lot of you asking to see my studio...well, here's s little sneak peak...

today i put the second coat of sealer on the floor. i'm putting a hi-gloss "wet look" sealer on the floor. the floor had 4 different tiles on it....crazy...i know...so i pulled up some of the yucky 70ish looking tile and left the fabulous little dice tiles...so now, half the floor is concrete and the other is the little dice tile...the floor is SO random, and i wanted to give it a little definition, so yesterday i painted a gray stripe on the floor where the tile met the concrete..the tiny little dice tiles met the concrete in a weird uneven line, so i painted the stripe, then put the first coat of sealer on.

after the second coat dries that i just put on, i will be ready to start moving in my goods! i'm so excited about this new space!!!! today is a dreary, cloudy day, and look at all of the natural light that still floods in! the big overgrown butterfly bushes in the front are getting tamed or removed to be replanted...not sure which one yet, but then i'm excited to do a little planting in the front beds...

this happy little studio will suit me just fine...i can't wait to nestle in!

time is flying by and yes...market is about 3 weeks away!!! last night i loaded up my pallette...yes i said pallette, no more loading down my truck like the beverly hillbillies this year, yes, thanks to my amazing husband, lily pottery kicked it up a notch and we're shipping our load of displays and stuff to market via freight. i'm so excited, this means, i just show up in Atlanta, and all my stuff will be waiting for me, in my booth, on the pallette...SO much easier than what i did last year...HUGE thanks and lots of hugs Isaiah for helping me do this!!!

i didn't have my good camera, so i snapped a few from my phone in the warehouse last night (sorry for the bad quality, but ya get the idea)...i'm really excited!

i am so happy to let you guys know about Paradigm's Shift...a brand new etsy shop that my uncle Rob has opened. Rob is more like a brother than an uncle seeing that we are only 4 years apart, but he has always been so creative and now he's channeled those creative juices and has began creating jewelry. he's been making jewelry for awhile for his wife and us, and every time we wear the jewelry out we get compliments, so he's decided to take the plunge and open an etsy shop. Rob currently lives in China with his lovely wife Meg. They both teach english, and during the summer tehy travel the world. he finds much of his inspiration during his travels then when he returns home, he creates this beautiful and elegant line of jewelry using precious metals and semi precious stones...if you're looking for the perfect party necklace, you've got to check out his shop, Paradigm's Shift!

okay, let me just say, i'm jumpin' outta my skin! today is the fashion photo shoot for my 2010 lily pottery catalog! i'm so excited!!!! last year was the first catalog i'd ever done...i learned so much from doing the last one, and now i'm thrilled to be embarking on the next one! i'm expanding the shoot to 2 models this year, and i actually had a little bit of a budget for wardrobe this year! (last year i just raided my own closet and dressed my the model (my sister) in my favorite clothes ;) this year's catalog will be a bit more on the fashion side of things...can't wait!!! we'll also be shooting a "behind the scenes" video...so be on the lookout for that... my friend Aaron Greene will be shooting to photos and i will have my sister model again along with my friend Cassia...these two beauties will be sure to make for fabulous catalog! here's just a few photos from last year's shoot taken by Aaron Greene...

first of all, i love me some Black Eyed Peas, but this video is stellar! this took place down town Chicago and i love this!

sometimes i feel like the girl in the blue shirt who's alone in the beginning just dancing my heart out...completely misunderstood by the people all around me and who think i'm totally crazy, but i know if i just keep feeling my groove and living my life to it's fullest while loving everyone around me, others will catch the love and it will spread and before you know, all the people who thought you were crazy and weird, will be loving their life and spreading their own crazy love and not caring what anyone else thinks!!!
so don't worry about what everyone around you is thinking or saying, just spread your crazy love and eventually it will catch on, but at least in the mean time, while you're waiting for it to catch on, you know your living every moment to it fullest and loving every second of it!

Christine who owns Terra Cotta is just so sweet and all of the girls who work there are just dolls! i found so many "goodies" while i was there and have been enjoying wearing each piece. i can't wait for my next trip to Savannah to get in some more shopping!

my buddies at flatiron introduced me to Boho Mag a few months back and immediately, i was smitten...i went home, subscribed and my first issue, the Fall Issue, showed up in my mail box last week...i think i've poured over each page at least 2 dozen times. each!!!...i LOVE boho mag!!! it's so fabulous! not only does it over fabulous material and is creative and beautiful to look at, but the mission of the green magazine is just perfect! i LOVE the Boho Girl "plant the {seed}" mantra because i totally identify with each line.

i am a happy little clam because...i planted two big bright and cheery planters outside my studio windows and they just brighten up the entrance to my studio and make me happy when i pull up to go to work every morning ;)

i am happy to introduce to you Zola Gallery in Durham, NC another wonderful place now carrying my line of Lily Pottery Jewelry! i met Heather in Atlanta at Market and i am so very excited to have my jewelry in her gallery which is loaded with fun and fabulous art work, home decor, and unique wearables and now lily pottery joins her fabulous mix...hoping to make a quick trip up to North Carolina soon to visit Heather and Zola in person!!!

ok, so i totally checked out last week and headed off to the mountains for a little backpacking/kayaking excursion with my fam... we had a blast living in nature for a week, but now i'm back and ready to get crackin'...here's a few pics from the trip.

wow! i am totally overwhelmed with the response to my new flowerlicious etsy shop!!! I had over 12 sales in the first 24 hours!! I am so glad that these hot little necklaces are such a hit! i am going to be a busy little bee the rest of this week making more flowerliciousness and re-stock the "shelves" of my etsy store! keep checking back daily for newe additions!!! many thanks to all of you and your support! xo!

i'm back and what a wonderful city Savannah is! i had a blast soaking in all of the goodness Savannah has to offer. we biked all over the city and walked as well... there was so much to visually take in, but here's a few photos i snagged of some super fun places we went while we were there...

this was right out the front door of our little cottage where we stayed..so quaint and lovely!

i've been SLAMMED this week crazy busy filling orders so i haven't even had a second to blog, but. next week i'll be posting about all of the fun new places i've been filling orders for and you can shop and find lily pottery, but for now, i'm skipping away for a little visit to Savannah GA. i've booked a fun Bed and Breakfast right in the heart of historic downtown just around the corner from ShopScad. i'm super excited to get away and check out some of Savannah's goodness...so i'll be checking out for the rest of the week, but when i get back i'll post about my fun little trip and the new shops carrying my jewelry. have a great week!!!
